November meeting was a free, do as you please day and we had four small lathes set up for anyone to have a go at. Over thirty members turned up and the atmosphere was really good with Howard on one lathe turning some brass pins for a box he was making that had a lid with a concealed spring hinge (naturally!!). Paul was turning a thin stemmed vase and Norman was turning fruit. Pat Hughes displayed the components that went into making his multi part walking stick and Fred Taylor was giving a few tips to Terry Andrews, one of our new members who has joined us with his wife Pauline and we also welcomed Peter Russell back after a long illness. Everyone else was either talking about whatever or standing round one of the lathes watching what was being made. We had a stand in the side room where Des Segens was selling the tools etc that had belonged to Peter Branchett. Bert brought in his pyrography kit and also some glass engraving tools, so Bill Bassant was burning wood while Sheila Smithers was etching a masterpiece into a piece of glass!! Ok. That was November and we have just one more meeting this year when we will be entertained by Carlyn Lindsay. Never heard of her? Her website shows a wide variety of work, specialising in laminated articles, from bowls to walking sticks. (One for you there Pat) so I’m sure she will give a demonstration worth coming along to. Lets have lots of bums on seats to see the old year out. That brings me nicely on to the next item. Enclosed is your renewal form for 2009 and the diary of events for 2009. After a lot of discussion at the last few committee meetings we have had to make the decision that regrettably the membership fee for 2009 will have to go up to £20, (£30 for husband and wife joint membership) and the door fee will go up to £8 when we have a demonstrator, eight of them this year and £12 for non-members. As always I would ask you to fill in the enclosed forms and return them to me as soon as possible so that I can print the new badges and start to compile the membership directory for 2009. The Events organisers have decided that there will not be a meeting in April because it falls on the Easter weekend. Instead it is planned that a trip to Yandles is laid on. For Orchard members it will be subsidised by the club but non-members will have to pay the full price. How much that is will depend on what size coach we have to hire. More information will be given out nearer the time. We need three people to join the committee for 2009. One to replace Bill Burden as Chairman, one to take over from Bert Lanham as events organiser, working alongside Paul Hunt and one to replace Bob Mann. To keep the club alive we really must fill these vacancies so please give it some serious thought. Graham |
